Used Wind Turbine Buyer’s Guide – Part Two

The increase in on-farm renewable energy has created a buoyant market for wind turbines. As finance is often a problem for these projects, second hand equipment is the only affordable option. In Part Two of our Used Wind Turbine Buyers Guide (part one here) we conclude on what buyers should be made aware of when purchasing their equipment.

Service & Backup

This is key to your decision making. Anyone can buy a second-hand turbine but who will look after and maintain your turbine over its twenty year life span?  Wind turbines are, by nature, acutely exposed to the elements and need on-going servicing and maintenance. Make sure your supplier can offer this and appropriate insurance against loss of earnings.

Second Hand/Factory Refurbished?

There is a major difference between a second-hand wind turbine and a factory refurbished wind turbine. The latter will have certification and insurance cover due to proper equipment overhaul and replacement, the former may not and, as such, it will not be a good long term investment. Insist that all works carried out on the turbine prior to installation are documented in detail.

Payment Schedule

Turbines are expensive and local companies cannot stock all makes and models. Don’t expect to pay for your turbine on installation. Suppliers will need up-front payments and you may not own the actual turbine until 90% has been paid. A company may retain your deposit if you decide not to proceed. This may seem unfair but local companies spend much time and money to secure equipment and cannot afford to commit such expenditure without a firm commitment.
