There are now many suppliers in the second hand wind turbine marketplace as well as some farmers directly importing their own equipment. While it is early days for many projects, there have already been reports of poor installations, failing equipment and non-compatible parts being supplied.
In this, the first of two parts of our Used Wind Turbine Buyers Guide, we look what to look out for if you only have the budget available to purchase a second hand wind turbine.
Turbine Specification
You should complete a written specification of what you require including make, model, hub height, generator size, civil engineering and noise emissions. Remember to make sure the turbine fits your planning approval and grid connection offer.
Turbine History
Ask the supplier about the turbine history, its previous install location, log book and service history. It is important that the turbine has not been previously accredited for ROCs in the UK.
Company Profile
Experience and actual examples are essential before committing to any supplier. Ask to see previous installs, speak to turbine owners, request to see workshop premises, do a company credit check and obtain a copy of installers accreditation certificates and insurance policies.
In Part Two we look at servicing and backup, what the difference between a used and refurbished wind turbine is and the important bit – the money.
