ROCS and Energy Advice

The Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation, known as the NIRO, is DETI’s main means of increasing renewable electricity generation in Northern Ireland.

The NIRO works in tandem with Renewables Obligations covering the rest of the UK. It obliges electricity suppliers to produce a certain number of certificates – known as ROCs – as a proportion of the amount of electricity which they supply to their customers in Northern Ireland.

The current banding levels are as follows:

Wind: up to 250kW – 4 ROCs

Photovoltaic (PV): up to 50kW – 4 ROCs
50kW to 250kW – 2 ROCs

ROCs are paid on all electricity generated by the renewable technology, regardless of whether or not it is consumed on site or sold to the grid.

Before a renewable energy installation can claim NIROCs, it must be registered with Ofgem; the body that is responsible for accrediting installations and issuing NIROCs to generators in Northern Ireland. The GreenYard can help you through this process.

NIROCs can be sold to any electricity supplier.  With our FarmEnergy investment service, we can now help you get the best returns for your Farm Energy and your NIROCs.
